Fallishness

Here are some random fall happenings here at our house.
Raking Leaves

And we have a 15 year old!
I’ve told him, we may be in Idaho, but he’s NOT getting his license till he’s 16.  There are no tractors on our property he needs to drive.
We are so excited to have a new temple less than ten minutes from our house!  The Meridian Idaho temple is opening in two weeks!  Our first time through the open house as a family was right after they opened and they were so concerned about getting enough people through that they only did silent tours and pushed us through in one big long line, not allowing us to really stop in any of the rooms or feel the spirit of the temple.  I was pretty bummed.  About a week later I was ushering at the temple and saw that they had changed how they were doing the tours. They were doing talking tours, letting people sit in the Celestial room for a bit, and explaining what each room was for.  I felt strongly that I should take each of my kiddos back through the temple open house on their own and make it a lunch date.  So I’ve checked each one out of school for lunch and the temple over the last two weeks!  It was a wonderful experience!  Such a tender mercy.  I hope they will cherish it as much as I did.
The view of the mountains

I forgot my phone the day I  took Reagan.  😦
 The beautiful Boise River Greenbelt
Levi wanted to go here on his date with me a few weeks ago.  It was the perfect fall day.
Liberty has learned to cross stitch!  She’s done nothing but cross stitch since Sunday when I taught her.  She made the letters up herself.

Halloween 2017

Pumpkin Carving
Ever the nerd, Cade pulled out his calculator and protractor to design his pumpkin.
But he read something yesterday that made him feel better about his nerdness.
“Be nice to nerds, chances are you will be working for one someday.”

Fastest carving on record!

And…the “funny pose”

Halloween!
We are down to two trick or treaters.  Levi was Coyote Peterson, a youtube sensation who finds crazy animals and insects to get stung by.  Levi thinks it’s the coolest thing ever.  Ugh.

 Meow!
Picking through the fake spiders at the store for this find was not an experience I want to repeat.
Ugh again.

Reagan took his little sister trick or treating and Levi got to go with friends while Cade went to his first “party”. They all had fun and the littles got WAY too much candy.
Happy Halloween!

Pumpkin Patch 2017

It’s that time of year you all look forward to… when you get to see my cherubic little ones prancing around in a fall wonderland of pumpkins and corn, sweetly smiling at their mother in angelic cooperativeness as I take their pictures. Ok, so that’s not how it works.  They are no longer chubby or cherubic (were they ever?) and they have never smiled sweetly in total cooperation.  It’s more like they run around as fast as they can ignoring my constant pleas to “Hold still for ONE SECOND so I can get a picture for the blog, dangit!” Time marches on and they get older and older.  I wish they’d stop that.  But, here they are for your viewing pleasure. I might just add in some oldies just to remind you that they once were cherubic and chubby.

Back when they were chubby…and before they started asking to “do a funny pose” after every picture I take.

I could just eat them up, couldn’t you?

Cruisin

We went on a cruise! The end of September. Don’t know how to describe it really.  It was fun to get away, fun to see how the whole cruise thing works and fun to hang out with Derek and Penny.  But the food was blah, our shower flooded the entire bathroom every time we showered and I spent the second day of the cruise with blurry vision.  All in all I’d say it was a good experience even with the few hiccups.

This was our ship, the Carnival Imagination

We boarded in Long Beach and that’s when I put on a motion sickness patch Penny had gotten from her Dr.  The next day when I woke up, I couldn’t read or focus on anything my eyes were so blurry.  They felt tired and red.  I couldn’t believe that my eyes would go bad in one day, but Derek was sure it was because I’m old.  It took us all that morning but we finally figured out it was a side effect of the patch.  I took it off and in another 12 hours my eyes were back to normal.  Whew!  Made me grateful for my sight, I’ll tell you what!
 Our first stop, Catalina Island

We rented some golf carts to drive around the tiny island.

Check out this cool Rock I found!
I think he’s trying to duplicate the face in the rock.

We took a glass bottom boat ride on Catalina.  Well, Penny, Derek and I did.  Rock was coming down with a cold and wanted to head back to the boat to read and sleep.
The fish were not the most colorful I’ve seen, but it was pretty cool.

Every morning when our room was cleaned they left one of these folded origami towels.  They were so fun I took a picture for the kids.
Scorpion
The next day we pulled into Ensenada, Mexio.
My attempt to get the Mexican flag unfurled caught this cool picture of the mini golf course on the top deck of the ship.
Ensenada was… well it wasn’t my favorite.  Maybe it’s from my years living in dry and barren Southern California, but I just didn’t find it beautiful at all.  We did an excursion to see a blow hole and shop at a Tiajuana type street full of shops.  It was just like in Jerusalem.  I still hate haggling!
The blowhole was also ok, not that great.  Here’s my best attempt to catch it.
That night as we headed back north we went up to watch the sunset.  We sailed right into fog.  It was pretty freaky.  The foghorn, blown right above your head, is NOT a pleasant experience.

The next day was our day at sea.  No land in sight!

We spent it lounging around on beach chairs.  It was beautiful!!

Loved hanging out with Derek and Penny.  Loved relaxing.  Loved talking with my wonderful husband for hours.  And, I loved the unlimited hot chocolate.
Final thoughts on Cruising:
We decided we will go on another cruise someday, but this time maybe one a little bit more upscale or one that takes you to some prettier places.
Alaska or the Bahamas anyone?

The End of Summer and the Total Eclipse

We celebrated/mourned the end of summer this year with the Total Eclipse.  We are lucky enough to live about thirty minutes from the Zone of Totality.  The fear mongers had convinced me to stay home and watch the 98% eclipse from my back yard for fear of being stuck on a road somewhere for days with the massive crowds who were heading our way to watch the eclipse.  But that morning, Rock checked the traffic and it was totally open all the way to Weiser, where we planned to watch it from.  So I decided at the last minute to join the rest of the family.  So glad I did!  There was NO traffic whatsoever on the way over and only a little bit on the way back.  We pulled right into the empty church parking lot and set up camp.  Sarin even had time to drive over and join us!  And we had a moment of silence for those beloved family members who couldn’t be with us that day.
It was incredible to feel the temperature drop, and to see how even when the sun was totally covered by the moon it STILL let light through!  It was also fun to watch it in a crowd.  Like watching fireworks, there’s just something that unifies humanity when you share something like that with a bunch of strangers. Loved it!  So glad I got to go!
The almost total eclipse with my camera doesn’t look like much.  I was hoping to get the crescent look, but it didn’t work.

Almost…there….
 Total Eclipse!!!
Check out those street lights!!!
We drove back home and packed up the lunch boxes and the back packs for First Day of School.
First day of High school for Reagan Dean.

Cade is on top this year in 8th grade.

Levi is in 4th and Liberty is in 2nd.
The school year has gone great so far for all the kids.
Reagan had his first orchestra concert in 2 years!  See if you can see him.
I’m in the home stretch!  Two more blog post to get caught up!  Stay tuned for our Cruise and Pumpkin Patch 2017!!

Hymas Family Reunion 2017

Waaaayyy back in August we had Rock’s family reunion in our favorite place, Eden, UT!  Loved the views, loved the company!

Games, Games, and More Games!

Lots of yummy food too, including sandwich making assembly lines.  I discovered the wonderfulness of Muenster cheese on this trip!!!  YUM!  Our fridge has been stocked with it ever since.

Beautiful morning walks

Eating at the Oaks, a restaurant overlooking the beautiful Weber River in Ogden Canyon.
 Cute Cousins

Levi and Jack had a blast together.  They raced each other everywhere and went exploring together whenever they could get away.  Levi got his first bee sting in the process and also found a very cool set of animal bones with a complete skull.
 We LOVE Farr’s Ice Cream!
Cute cousins brushing their teeth.
And a ridiculous looking Aunt
Family Pictures-I will post the good ones from Uncle Sam when he gets them put up.  🙂

Water balloons!!!

Playing at the Pine View Resevoire

And Grandma’s professional Birthday cake.
Grandma was a good sport when half her children disappeared to deal with car issues.  We were looking at buying a new van in Tremonton on the way to the reunion.  As it turns out, Sam’s van broke down on the way from South Carolina and to make a long story (and lots of crazy trips away from the reunion) short, we sold our old van to Sam and we bought a new van while on this trip!
Thanks for the good times, Hymas family!  Until next time!

Chasing Chipmunks-Red Fish Lake

Still catching up from Summer… my goal is to be all caught up by the end of October!!!

While Reagan was away on his 50 mile hike this summer we took the rest of the kids camping up at Red Fish Lake in the Sawtooth Mountains.  We couldn’t let Reagan have all the fun. It was beautiful and fun and peaceful and unforgettable.

We did have a few small hiccups on our drive up.  The first was not so much a hiccup as a really sad commentary on the dessert where we live or more likely the fact that we need to get our children outside more.  In our defense, family outings are rather painful at our house so we don’t  do them as often as we should.  As we drove up into the mountains Liberty asked, “Mom, is this a forest?” Mom: “Yes”. Libby again: “Oh, at first I thought it was just a big tree farm.”

Before the drive up I had stashed the DWWWDOC in the glove compartment of our trusty minivan for use at some point down the road.  For those of you not familiar with modern day car travel that acronym stands for Devices With Which We Drug Our Children more commonly known as ipods.  After a pleasant first hour drive I went to pull them out, but the glove compartment wouldn’t open.  I pulled and yanked but it wouldn’t budge.  Finally we had to pull over so Rock could try.  The kids got to enjoy some dangerous scenic overlooks while we wrestled with the door.  I could have sworn I took a picture of them dangling themselves over the cliff while their father and I tried to save the devices, but I guess not.  We did finally get it open but not without breaking it.  It would no longer close, but hung open on my legs the entire rest of the trip.

The next hiccup was more like an upchuck.  Libby got car sick.  Luckily her mother is uber prepared and whipped out a ziplock back for her to be sick in so we had no messes to deal with.  Handy things, those ziplock bags.  Just think what MacGuyver could have done if he’d had those in the 80s?!  Libby managed to recover, but only after a good sleep.

In Stanley we stopped at the gas station where I realized that I had remembered the ziplocks and forgotten the sun screen.  DO NOT EVER BUY SUNSCREEN IN STANLEY, IDAHO.  Unless you want to mortgage your home and all your possessions away.  Ugh.  I seriously had a debate with myself at the register when the nice little attendant told me how much it would cost.  $10.00!!!!!  For sunscreen!!! “Hmm, skin cancer or my life’s savings, what to do…”  I decided to buy it and frame it when I got home as a monument to modern day capitalism as its finest.
We arrived at our campsite only to find that we could not park in our actual the campsite, something I was greatly perturbed by, I must say.  What kind of car camping is it if you can’t back your car right into the site so that everything you need is within 12 feet of you at all times!!!??  On the bright side, Cade got to get in a little practice for the Trek next year!

The rest of our campout went swimmingly.  The kids loved the gigantic rock right near our campsite.  I was not as thrilled by it’s mammoth size, but that only added to their pleasure.  They had a great time climbing to the top over and over.

Levi is on the left.

Liberty found her own size rock to read on.

Dad joined her for little while.
The kids discovered that the campground was covered with chipmunks and this became their fascination for the rest of the trip.  They chased them all over the place.  Trying to get a few on camera was pretty tough.  They are fast little suckers.  I took twenty just to get these three.

 How many can you see?
After setting up camp we headed to the lake for a very cold swim.

They had the most amazing ice cream at Red Fish Lodge.  It’s worth the 3.5 hour drive just for that!
More exploring before dinner.

We roasted marshmallows and smores, read Harry Potter by the fire.  Good times!
And I actually SLEPT for the first time since camping as a kid!  I brought an air mattress and ear plugs and that did the trick!  I could do this again!
Nothing is better than a camping breakfast.  I don’t know if it’s the hot chocolate or the pancakes cooked in bacon grease, but it’s heavenly.  It’s my favorite part of camping.
When we went to get our food out of the bear box that morning I found this little moth.  But just barely, can you spot him?
The kids explored till their hearts content all morning .  We found a beautiful little alcove that was so quiet and peaceful.  Nobody was there.  Still can’t figure that out, but I was grateful.

 Cade in Contemplation
This was such a wonderful trip.  The kids got to swim, climb, explore.  It was a little slice of heaven.

Wesel Women in Washington

More belated summer travels for you…..

In July my sisters, mom and I drove to Washington so we could visit my aunts.  I have four wonderful aunts who were a big part of my growing up years that we never get to see anymore because even my parents are no longer in Olympia.  It was so much fun!

We set off bright and early one Saturday morning We set off rather late in the morning much to our Trip Nazi’s chagrin.  Allison is our Trip Nazi.  She likes to leave early, make good time and she likes to stay busy.  My mother, who is the Heat Nazi and not the Trip Nazi is more…relaxed in her approach to traveling.  Sarin and I fall somewhere in between.  The mix of approaches does not always make for happy travelers, but we survived none the less and even managed to have a good time.

Part of Alli’s trip nazi-ness is that she likes to stop for gas when her tank is half full.  Thus necessitating more stops than most travelers are used to (or think necessary).  This would have been fine if the gas stations had cooperated with her.  But they didn’t.  In Oregon we talked for 10 minutes before we turned off the freeway about how annoying it is that we can’t fill our own gas tanks in Oregon.  We then tried to convince her that she didn’t NEED to get gas yet and could wait until we were out of Oregon.  Apparently we all have some blonde in us, well, three of us do anyway, and none of us caught her before she pulled into the gas station, got out to pump her own gas out of habit and was accosted by the Oregon gas station employee.  “Can I help you, Miss?” (ie. “Don’t you dare pump  your own gas here or we’ll have you arrested!”) It’s rare that I laugh so hard I cry, but if it happens, it happens with my sisters and mom.  This was one of those times. She meekly got back in the car after telling him what gas she wanted.  When it came time for her to give her credit card, he really did want to arrest her because the one she gave him didn’t even work.  She was in deep mortification by then, but we were absolutely no assistance as we were helplessly laughing ourselves sick.
We pulled away from the gas station grateful we live in states where we can pump our own gas.  But Alli’s gas troubles were far from over.  The very next time we needed gas, well, the very next time she thought she needed gas, we pulled into a station, she whipped out her card and the machine would not respond.  She pulled ahead to the next one and it didn’t work either.  She tried a different card, she tried staring at it for a while silently pleading for it to work while her family died laughing in the car.

Pleading
Resignation
 Acceptance
We finally tried a different gas station where I’m pretty sure my mom paid.
We took the route through Mt. Rainier National Park.  It was beautiful, but now that the Columbia Gorge is on fire I’m a little sad we didn’t go that way.
But we love our mountain!

We stayed with Aunt Kaye and Uncle Roger who are in their 80’s and still the perfect hosts.  We tried so hard to get Aunt Kaye not to cook a fancy meal for every meal.  She just loves to entertain.   Alli and I got to sleep in their little shed turned cottage.  Their home really should be a bed and breakfast.
Found this gem on Uncle Roger’s Shelf.

We just happened to be there for Lakefair Fireworks!  We made sure to watch from the capital building.  There is nothing like listening to the huge booming explosions right over your head with the echo off the rotunda.  It is really like bombs bursting in air.
We hit some more of our favorite places like Tumwater Falls Park.

Ate at Meconi’s-the best sub shop in the world!

 Priest Point Park
This is a root system dug out under the tree,
Big enough for Alli and Sarin to get in.
Ate at Meconi’s. Again
We drove out to Boston Harbor and found Libby Road!
A “High”light of our trip was finding Marijuana stores all over the place.  Who knew there was even such a thing! At first we couldn’t figure out what all the green buildings were on every corner like 7-11’s. Didn’t take us long to figure it out.  We started documenting, there were so many.

Ate at Meconi’s. Again.
Ok, just kidding.  We only ate their twice.
The real highlight of our trip was seeing all my loving, beautiful, funny, ever fashionable aunts.  We went to lunch with all of them-(not at Meconi’s), but I only got a picture of Aunt Karla.  Her sparkly, stylish cane was just so…her.  I had to get a picture.

I love these four dear ladies and wish I could see them more often. I’m grateful for all their love and support throughout my life.  Aunt Karla was like a second mother to me my senior year in high school when our family lived with them.  Aunt Kristi worried for my survival when I went to Jerusalem and always made me laugh.  Aunt Kaye showed me how to love selflessly. And Aunt Karen showed me what true devotion to an aging parent looks like. They are all still young at heart and beautiful inside and out.
I will put in a word here about my wonderful Uncles too.  Uncle Roger gave me a signed copy of his book and a beautiful poem, one of many, that he has written. Uncle Richard shared some of his knowledge and expertise in landscaping with me.  His yard is always beautiful!  Love these two too!
This was a quick trip, but it was a blast.  I hope my wonderful Washington aunts and uncles stick around for a long time to come!  I hope my mom and sisters do too.  😉

The Temple and the Mall

While Reagan was away in Colorado we did a few fun outings here at home with the other three.

We drove past the Meridian temple to see the new landscaping and the kids really wanted to get out and walk around. Here is what it looks like at this point:

It is still closed off so we drove to the Boise temple to walk around its grounds.
Aren’t they reverent?

Liberty loved all the flowers and walked around with my phone taking pictures.  Some are actually pretty good!

Levi got real quiet and contemplative after a while and went off by himself.  I asked him later where he’d been and he said he’d just wanted to be by himself cause he really liked the peaceful feeling he felt.  Me too, buddy, me too.

Later that week we went to the mall to see a Lego exhibit of all the national monuments.  It was very cool.  And interestingly enough, Cade did not want to stay with the group this time either.
To give you an idea of Scale
 Liberty at the Liberty Bell
Liberty at the Statue of Liberty
I have been remiss in my duties as mother of a girl, apparently.  I am not a fan of the mall so I avoid it when I can and do my shopping elsewhere, but this girl LOVED the MALL!  When we walked into the mall my girl was in heaven.  She stopped to stare in all the windows to ooh and ahh over the beautiful clothes and accessories.
She designs clothes for fun if you’ll remember…

She LOVED Claire’s.  As she walked around looking at all the jewelry and other cool accessories she said, “Mom, can I just put this whole store on my wish list?” (Penny will appreciate that one)

She was in HEAVEN.
She’s now saving her money so she can do a shopping trip to Claire’s.

Reagan’s Busy Summer

Reagan has had quite the busy summer.  He spent a week at his grandparents in Colorado, went to Boise Youth Spectacular (EFY Boise style), Youth Conference, last week was the 50 miler, then the family reunion and then High Adventure.  He also got some very good news too-read on.

Grand Junction trip:

Reagan flew on an airplane alone for the first time to Salt Lake where his grandparents picked him up and drove him back to GJ.  They stopped at the Provo City Center Temple on their way.  I don’t think he knew that he had actually been in the tabernacle long before it was a temple.  Our stake conferences were there back when Reagan was a newborn.

His grandparents kept him busy all week and tried hard to stuff him with food.
Go Carts and Mini Golf

A visit to Annette, Grandma’s “rock hound” friend.  He loved talking to her about all her collection.  This boy loves rocks and archaeology.

The Fruita Dinosaur Museum
Here is an excerpt from the journal Grandma kept of a few of the days of his trip.
Thursday we went to Dinosaur Hill and looked at the mine where some guys found 2/3rds of the skeleton/fossil of an Apatasourus. Reagan dug around in the same hill and brought home a bunch of interesting rocks. Next we drove out to Rabbit Valley where there was supposed to be an active dino dig. but it was all covered up and looked abandoned. Too hot to do the associated hike so we went home, had dinner and later drove over the Monument, did a hike near the visitor’s center, where I am very glad Kami was not with us. Too many sheer 1000 foot drop offs. At the end of that hike Reagan ran into a huge strong spider web that excited and freaked him out.  Then we went to Freddy’s for frozen custard.

Friday was fossil hunting on Douglas Pass. Totally fun. Tons of success. He will of course show you the fossils. Make sure he tells you about Dick King.  I also have to say that it was so fun to see Reagan interacting with both Annette (rock hound friend) and Dick, both old geezers so well, very comfortably, no awkwardness or shyness, lots of enthusiasm.  Dick told me that he had tried to get his grandaughters interested in fossil hunting with out success. So I think he enjoyed Reagan immensely. After that long day we went out to Chick-Fil-A. for dinner.

Saturday we shopped for his Colorado t-shirt, went to see Cars 3, came home for dinner and a mango (Grandpa taught him how to peel it) and some more ice cream for dessert.

Sunday we visited Grandma after we had lunch at about 3:30. He wasn’t sure about visiting Grandma for a whole hour. But he did fine, and answered her repeated questions patiently, we took pics, etc. She made him laugh with her statement about how all the great grand kids were smart and good looking. 🙂 Also, on the way home from church he started helping me fix my phone notification sounds.  And I was grateful he knew so much.

(Grandma continues…)
He always thanked us for the things we did. He helped with meal cleanup, and he ate what we fixed. Just not very much, except the last night, when he had 4 ribs and some salad, and a mango and ice cream!
We loved our week with him!
And we love you, for agreeing to let us spoil him for a week!

Thank you for having him, G and G! He had a great time. I vividly remember visiting my grandparents in NY when I was his age.  Instead of ice cream every night it was sugary cereal every morning.  And gumdrops in the gumdrop jar.  Good memories!  Aren’t Grandparents great?!
Peanut Free No More!

As most of you know, Reagan has been allergic to peanuts his whole life.  We recently signed Reagan up to do a Peanut allergy desensitizing study.  They basically pay you to eat small amounts of peanut dust that will gradually desensitize you to peanuts so you won’t have a dangerous reaction when you eat them.  In order to qualify for the study you have to have a level 14 allergy to the peanut.  That takes a blood test.  This boy almost passed out, he hates needles so much, but he survived and we waited a week to hear the results.  They called us back to tell us that his level was 0.05!!!!!!  Which means, he’s NOT allergic to peanuts, maybe never was.  The next step was to do a food challenge.  So on July 5th I took him in and we spent 5 hours in the doctors office while they fed him gradually increasing amounts of peanut butter.  He didn’t like the taste that much, and I told him it’s just because it wasn’t JIF.

But he had absolutely no reaction.  So, we are now totally peanut allergy free at our house and I am so thrilled!!!!  Peanut butter cookies here we come!  So, on second thought, maybe it’s my good news.  🙂  Or maybe it’s Liberty’s.  When she saw this picture just now she said, “It’s gonna be so great!  We can have Oaties whenever we want!  It’s like the best life!”  lol!!

The 50 Miler+14

Last Saturday we waited for him to get home from the 50 Miler so we could turn around and head to a family reunion in Utah.  He had such a great time on the hike it took him from Boise all the way to Glen’s Ferry to tell me about it-about 1.5 hours!  He loved it.  Admittedly, part of the joy came from being able to actually eat real trail mix with nuts in it for the first time in his life!  Kudos to all the young men leaders who went along and made it great. Then right after the reunion we dropped him off in Rexburg so he could attend High Adventure where his poor blistered feet had to hike 14 more miles in the Tetons!  He just got back from that one yesterday! Whew!

Now it’s time to focus on getting ready for his next big adventure…. HIGH SCHOOL!!!!
Watch out world!
