McCall is Calling

Our next trip this summer was up to McCall to pick up Levi and Cade from Scout Camp.
We had two boys and a grandpa up at Camp Morrison again this year. Same grandpa, different boys.
We drove up to the Brundage Reservoir before heading home.
I love this place!

The kids found a frog and proceeded to argue over the best treatment of said frog.  Levi wanted to pick it up, Reagan wanted him to leave it alone, Cade and Libby, well they didn’t care.  Levi won.

Letting the frog go–after arguing about the best way to let him go.
I’m sure the campers nearby were thrilled to be such an intimate part of our family bonding.

 Amazing views!

Can’t go to McCall without going to Ice Cream Alley.
Once home, we celebrated Liberty and Cade’s birthdays.  9 and 15
On her birthday Liberty finally got to buy the bunny she’s been saving for.  Meet, Amber!
How many kids does it take to catch a bunny?
We are now up to two pets, believe it or not!
And this summer I FINALLY got petunias to grow in a pot on my patio!  I’ve been trying for years and they always die.  But this year I figured out how to kill the blasted caterpillar that is eating them!  Woohoo!

The 4th of July-Coeur d’alene Style

We decided last minute to spend the 4th of July in Coeur d’alene this year!  Believe it or not when we asked the kids if they wanted to go they didn’t jump at the chance.  They love our neighborhood 4th of July pancake breakfast/parade and our cul de sac fireworks so much that they almost didn’t want to go.  We finally convinced them but only by promising to leave after the breakfast.  Then a neighbor found out my kids were going to miss the fireworks and several of them offered to join us in shooting off our fireworks early!  So the kids ended up getting the best of both worlds.

A neighbor family that just moved in has a kid the same age as all of our kids.  Libby has been praying for a little girl her age to move into our cul-de-sac since she was four!  She finally got her wish.
Then it was off to Coeur d’alene
Amber Waves of Grain!
We drove all day in time to get there to watch the big fireworks over the lake.  The kids were doubtful it would be as good as their beloved neighborhood fireworks, not having been to many big shows in their life.  But they were blown away…no pun intended.
No I didn’t take this picture.  🙂
The next day we played around Coeur d’alene.  Levi and Rock went cliff jumping:

We ate Gooeys at the Coeur d’alene resort.  They were as big as Liberty’s head and so delicious!
Libby was thrilled, but Levi was not so sure…

We were all hot and tired after a long day exploring Coeur d’alene in the heat, so we went back to the hotel for a swim and some popcorn.
The next day the girls rented bikes to ride along the lake and the boys hiked Tubb’s Hill.
You can see Levi on the middle rock if you look close.
Then we played at the beach.
And got some more ice cream.
Coeur d’alene was beautiful!
And if you noticed that we are short one child, that is because Cade is working up at Scout Camp this summer.

Yellowstone Part II

On our second day in Yellowstone we covered the southern portion of the park-ie, fewer animal sightings and way more geysers and hot pots.

Old Faithful
Kind of anti-climatic, but hey, now we can say we’ve seen it.

 Grand Prismatic Spring
Blue smoke!
This one was kind of a mystery to me.  They have gone to great lengths to build and maintain a walkway up to this pool, but unless you are 10 feet tall, you can’t really see how cool this is.  It takes a helicopter ride or the internet to give you the real view:

From West Thumb we continued south out of the park to see the Tetons and Jackson Hole.

I LOVE the Tetons!

No trip to Rexburg is complete without a trip to my favorite frozen yogurt on the planet-Millhollow!
It has not changed one single bit in (almost) 25 years.
On our way home, just outside of Idaho Falls and luckily near civilization we got a nice flat tire.  Drove over a screw that popped the tire in two places.

While we waited on the side of the road for our Uber, this was our beautiful view.
It was a gorgeous day and all in all the flat took only an hour and a half to get fixed.

Our last stop  on the trip was a river in the middle of nowhere so Reagan could look for rocks-he’s really into geology.

The trip was a great success.  The only thing missing was a Moose sighting.
Guess we’ll have to go back!
When Reagan got home, he started his first job at Papa Murphy’s!

Yellowstone Part I

We gave Reagan a trip to Yellowstone when he turned 16.  He didn’t get to take that trip in October because we didn’t want to deal with Yellowstone in the snow.  Instead we took him the day school got out.  Turns out it was perfect weather and perfect timing as far as the crowds go.  Here’s the story.

Our first day in the park it took almost three hours to get to Madison, a drive that should  have taken 15 minutes.  We started to doubt that Yellowstone was ever NOT crowded when we finally came upon the cause of the traffic.  It was not a traffic jam at all but a Buffalo Jam!!!

We got our first view of these big slow animals here:
We got out of the car to get a better look and suddenly they were not quite as slow as I thought and they started running towards us!  We had to jump back in the car before they stampeded us!
The Grand Canyon of Yellowstone-So THAT’s why it’s called Yellowstone!
This canyon was my favorite part of the whole park!
Gorgeous!
Tower Falls

 Mammoth Falls
Elk in the road.  They were all over, sitting in the grass, walking around, big as life.  No antlers though.

Elk Herd
We stopped every time we saw a group of cars gathered on the side of the road looking at animals.  This time it was a mama bear and her two cubs.  Mama is the brown spot to the left of the middle standing tree.  Her cubs were hiding at the base of that tree.
We headed to the Lamar Valley next and got stopped by this guy and his pals.

All in all on just our first day in Yellowstone we saw: a mama bear and her two cubs, buffalo, a wolf, elk, baby elk, mountain goats, an antelope of some kind, a black bear and a bald eagle on a nest in the grand canyon.  What an amazing day!  And that was without binoculars!
We got caught in a rainstorm that left the most amazing rainbow as we ended our first day in Yellowstone.
Stay tuned for Part II

The Master Bathroom Remodel

Rock has been wanting to remodel our bathroom for years, but I usually prefer to spend money updating stuff everyone else can see and use.  I finally decided to go along with his idea and we recently had our master bathroom remodeled.  It was quite the experience and not really an easy one.  We hired a contractor, but not a designer so we had to pick all the tile, faucets, grout, cabinets etc. etc. etc. Talk about overwhelming!  Some people love this kind of thing, but apparently I’m not one of them. Too much second guessing and way too many options to choose from.  But I learned a LOT about myself in the process and overall, we are thrilled with the result!  Here are the before and afters….

Before
The goal was to get rid of the bathtub we never use (it’s not jetted), expand the shower and make it a walk in where the bathtub used to be and expand the closet.
 Demolition
After
Walk in Shower.  Around the corner is a nice spacious shower!

We love love love our new bathroom!  The only downside is that now I really want to remodel the other bathrooms!

February to May in 60 Seconds

I have been doing an abysmal job blogging this year, but I am going to do some catch up.  Here is some fun stuff that happened, much of it random, from February-May 2019
Chef Liberty baked cookies
Lei went to the temple for the first time.
We saw an amazing full double rainbow right out our back door.  This is my phone’s attempt at panoramic view.
I happened to run into these two strange people in IKEA.
Libby (and her brothers) got a new baby GIRL cousin.
We finally made it to Bruneau Sand Dunes
Libby made a cake to celebrate the first day of Spring.  And then threw a party-cause that’s what she does.
All the many signs of spring around our yard this year:

My First Tulips!

Our Beautiful Cherry Blossoms
 My First Lilacs!
Found these duck eggs when the mother was hovering.
Liberty got her first set of braces.  She was super excited….for about an hour, and then she was not excited any more.
Levi was (gasp!) Benedict Arnold for the 5th grade wax museum.
Levi and Liberty finished a puzzle together.  It started as a fight and ended as a win.
Cade was in Track and Field.
 Reagan was in Improv Club.
Levi lost his CTR ring, was devastated, his brothers and sister searched the entire church yard and with the help of Heaven….
 They found it!!!

 Spring Piano Recital.
 Spring Dance Recital
5th Grade Graduation/Rock Around the Ages Program
Funny quote when they started practicing for their program, “Mom, have you ever heard the song, “You Give Love a Bad Name?” LOLOLOL!
Ok, that was more like 90 seconds, but I was close!

January Joys and Sorrows

After Christmas the Wesel women went to Wood Creations. Liberty was in her element; crafting and socializing.  Definitely a Joy.

Finished Product
 Rainbow Looming… More Joy
Alli’s gift to Levi for Christmas was a mini pumpkin pie.  She helped him bake it and then helped him share his excitement over the gift here in this photo.
I think she’s excited enough for the both of them.
Too much Joy?
The Sorrow
Liberty was running away from an older kid who was teasing her when she tripped and fell.  The Sorrow. She hurt her arm enough that we took her into Urgent Care who X-rayed it and said she was fine but told her to wear a brace.  Two weeks later when she was still in pain we took her in again and sure enough-it was broken.  She was beyond excited to be getting a cast, though, so I guess Joy cometh
in the morning after the cast.
Getting the Cast

She took a pen with her everywhere she went so everyone and their dog could sign it.  It was totally full in two days.  She even tried to get the Bishop to sign it.  (roll eyes)
Liberty happened to find this book on the shelf and decided to read the whole thing and make this cool bookmark to go with it.
Liberty performed her winter dance recital in her cast.  But it matched her costume so, more Joy!

 Statue of Liberty
Also in January, Liberty went to the Orthodontist for the first time.  She was very excited to get started fixing her teeth. Joy!  And she matched the chair in the waiting room. Double Joy!
Once they actually put the expander in her mouth, she did not feel as much Joy.  And when the braces finally go on, she won’t feel any joy either, but I’m not telling her that.  We’ll let reality kill the dream.
And these were my birthday flowers.  Joy!

Christmas for Spring Break

Well, here it is Spring Break and I’m finally blogging about Christmas.  So much for Tis the Season….

Nativity Dress Rehearsal

We literally had the “Best Christmas Pageant Ever” at church this year.  The entire primary acted out the nativity and it was so awesome!  Pure pandemonium in the primary room getting everyone into costume, but unforgettable!
 Christmas Sunday
Remember when their heads didn’t reach the stockings?  Yeah, me too.
Christmas Eve Peppermint Milkshakes for Breakfast
The official Hymas Family Nativity this year.

We did something different this year to accommodate our aging audience.  We had each of the kids pick a person/persons from the nativity story and research about them and then share what they learned.  Then we had the animals act out the nativity.  We read the story and sang the songs, but did not make anyone wear sheets or towels on their heads.  It went Very well!
Cookies for Santa cause we often forget…
Christmas Eve gifts this year were new fleece sheets for everyone.  For once in their lives their Christmas Eve presents were the biggest under the tree.

Twas the Night Before Christmas

Christmas Morning

Playing Mario Cart on the Switch for the first time

Libby’s favorite gift: The Rainbow Loom
Her second favorite gift; an Aunt Karla worthy outfit plus matching watch from Santa.
A new refrigerator for Dad’s office
 Dungeons and Dragons Handbook
Figuring out the puzzles from Mason and Jess
 The Damage

Winner of the best gift award goes to Santa.  He gave Rock his very own Spritz cookie maker.  We can probably thank Mrs. Claus for the actual cookies that came with it.

December Growing Pains

So here it is, Super Bowl Sunday and I am finally sitting down to blog about December and Christmas.  I could care less about the game and have never actually seen a super bowl in my life, but my kids have decided it’s cool to watch it.  So we made popcorn and cookies and they are all in the basement pretending they know what’s going on and…bonding.  While I blog.

This school year has been a year of firsts for Cade (and for me).  He has found a great group of friends, boys and girls, and they are always doing stuff together.  They read the Book of Mormon together in 24 hours, they go the temple together and hang out together whenever they can.  Oh, and text each other constantly.  I am now beginning to see why parents want their kids to have a license.  I’m always driving him somewhere!  Cade really wanted to have a kick off to Christmas party so on December 1st we had all his friends over.  He planned it all; food, white elephant gift exchange and Elf the movie.  It was pretty weird, I gotta say, having 15 loud teenagers in my house.  That was a first for us.  But it was fun to see him with his friends and to know he is fitting in and happy.  And according to Cade’s friends, his mom is “so great” and has “awesome hair”.  So that’s good.  Always nice to have the approval of one’s child’s friends.

Along with being super social this year, Cade has joined wrestling.  He has really enjoyed wrestling, however I have not. I just can’t watch my child being twisted, headlocked and bent in all kinds of wrong directions and then thrown to the mat from off someone’s shoulders.  It’s too painful for me to watch.  Soccer, baseball, flag football I can do.  I will leave the contact sports to their dad to watch.  Cade is really growing me up as a mom.  All these firsts.  Another first this year: attending a sporting event to watch your son, sitting by girls who have also come to watch said son.  I used to be that girl, going to sporting events of the boys I liked.  I can’t possibly be this old.

Also back in early December we got some amazing snow.  It’s the only good snow storm we’ve had this winter.  We usually get dry powdery snow that is wonderful for skiing but terrible for snowmen.  Not this time.  The kids made the biggest snowmen EVER!

The big snowman was taller than Rock.
Levi has been learning about US history in school and though I am not happy with the quality of the learning (I will spare you my “I could do it way better” spiel) he has done a few cool things.  He made this replica of a colonial house, choosing the hardest thing on the list of options for the assignment.
Levi had a birthday in December and got to celebrate it with his cousin who’s birthday is two days before his.
They both asked for the SAME kind of cake!
Levi earned his Faith in God award just before they made him a Deacon at church.  He turned 11 and then got bumped up one whole year early! The weeks leading up to his ordination he was so concerned about passing the sacrament correctly that he took notes as he watched the older deacons pass it. He is thrilled to be a scout and go on camp outs.
One last funny story about Levi.  We were at my parents one night and he was fascinated by my dad’s record player.  He kept investigating it trying to figure out how it worked.  I was feeling old enough at that point, and then my dad handed me one of MY old records.  Yes, I owned actual records.  That’s how old I am.

Yeah, I was a big Madonna fan. I will never forget my dad sitting me down and talking with me about what “Like a Virgin” meant.  LOLOLOL!
Stay tuned for Christmas 2019!

Four Little Turkeys and their Leader

We had my nephews over for the day on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving. Levi planned a whole day of festivities for the boys.  It was a hoot to see him running a full on Turkey Day Camp.  The day’s activities included a Turkey Hunt outside, a Turkey craft inside and other turkey themed games he made up.  My nephews and Liberty, who was also part of the fun, had a blast.

Two days later was Thanksgiving
Rock made a cherry pie because my family never makes enough pies to suit him.
Turned out pretty good, though I wouldn’t know how it tasted.  I don’t like pie.

We spent the day at my brother’s house and the kids were in heaven.  They played with their cousins from 10 AM-10 PM.  Best Thanksgiving EVER!

Except for the part where they had to wait for dinner…..
Derek’s idea of an apron…..
Yes, that’s a paper towel.  Well, several paper towels, actually.

This year I am thankful no one was sick on Thanksgiving.  I’m thankful for my instant pot which makes mashed potatoes (and eggs and roast and everything else) EASY PEEZY.  I’m thankful for a husband who is patient.  I’m thankful for my home and my country.  I’m thankful teenage-hood does not last forever. I’m thankful for my picture slideshow screen saver that reminds me they used to be adorable with fat cheeks.  I’m thankful for sisters to shop with on Black Friday.  I’m thankful for seat belts that don’t beep.  I’m thankful for my testimony and my Savior.  And I’m thankful for the selfless people who let me into traffic-it almost brings me to tears when someone is that thoughtful.  Silly, I know, but it humbles me every time and I am grateful.
Just to name a few!
