Wesel Women in Washington

More belated summer travels for you…..

In July my sisters, mom and I drove to Washington so we could visit my aunts.  I have four wonderful aunts who were a big part of my growing up years that we never get to see anymore because even my parents are no longer in Olympia.  It was so much fun!

We set off bright and early one Saturday morning We set off rather late in the morning much to our Trip Nazi’s chagrin.  Allison is our Trip Nazi.  She likes to leave early, make good time and she likes to stay busy.  My mother, who is the Heat Nazi and not the Trip Nazi is more…relaxed in her approach to traveling.  Sarin and I fall somewhere in between.  The mix of approaches does not always make for happy travelers, but we survived none the less and even managed to have a good time.

Part of Alli’s trip nazi-ness is that she likes to stop for gas when her tank is half full.  Thus necessitating more stops than most travelers are used to (or think necessary).  This would have been fine if the gas stations had cooperated with her.  But they didn’t.  In Oregon we talked for 10 minutes before we turned off the freeway about how annoying it is that we can’t fill our own gas tanks in Oregon.  We then tried to convince her that she didn’t NEED to get gas yet and could wait until we were out of Oregon.  Apparently we all have some blonde in us, well, three of us do anyway, and none of us caught her before she pulled into the gas station, got out to pump her own gas out of habit and was accosted by the Oregon gas station employee.  “Can I help you, Miss?” (ie. “Don’t you dare pump  your own gas here or we’ll have you arrested!”) It’s rare that I laugh so hard I cry, but if it happens, it happens with my sisters and mom.  This was one of those times. She meekly got back in the car after telling him what gas she wanted.  When it came time for her to give her credit card, he really did want to arrest her because the one she gave him didn’t even work.  She was in deep mortification by then, but we were absolutely no assistance as we were helplessly laughing ourselves sick.
We pulled away from the gas station grateful we live in states where we can pump our own gas.  But Alli’s gas troubles were far from over.  The very next time we needed gas, well, the very next time she thought she needed gas, we pulled into a station, she whipped out her card and the machine would not respond.  She pulled ahead to the next one and it didn’t work either.  She tried a different card, she tried staring at it for a while silently pleading for it to work while her family died laughing in the car.

Pleading
Resignation
 Acceptance
We finally tried a different gas station where I’m pretty sure my mom paid.
We took the route through Mt. Rainier National Park.  It was beautiful, but now that the Columbia Gorge is on fire I’m a little sad we didn’t go that way.
But we love our mountain!

We stayed with Aunt Kaye and Uncle Roger who are in their 80’s and still the perfect hosts.  We tried so hard to get Aunt Kaye not to cook a fancy meal for every meal.  She just loves to entertain.   Alli and I got to sleep in their little shed turned cottage.  Their home really should be a bed and breakfast.
Found this gem on Uncle Roger’s Shelf.

We just happened to be there for Lakefair Fireworks!  We made sure to watch from the capital building.  There is nothing like listening to the huge booming explosions right over your head with the echo off the rotunda.  It is really like bombs bursting in air.
We hit some more of our favorite places like Tumwater Falls Park.

Ate at Meconi’s-the best sub shop in the world!

 Priest Point Park
This is a root system dug out under the tree,
Big enough for Alli and Sarin to get in.
Ate at Meconi’s. Again
We drove out to Boston Harbor and found Libby Road!
A “High”light of our trip was finding Marijuana stores all over the place.  Who knew there was even such a thing! At first we couldn’t figure out what all the green buildings were on every corner like 7-11’s. Didn’t take us long to figure it out.  We started documenting, there were so many.

Ate at Meconi’s. Again.
Ok, just kidding.  We only ate their twice.
The real highlight of our trip was seeing all my loving, beautiful, funny, ever fashionable aunts.  We went to lunch with all of them-(not at Meconi’s), but I only got a picture of Aunt Karla.  Her sparkly, stylish cane was just so…her.  I had to get a picture.

I love these four dear ladies and wish I could see them more often. I’m grateful for all their love and support throughout my life.  Aunt Karla was like a second mother to me my senior year in high school when our family lived with them.  Aunt Kristi worried for my survival when I went to Jerusalem and always made me laugh.  Aunt Kaye showed me how to love selflessly. And Aunt Karen showed me what true devotion to an aging parent looks like. They are all still young at heart and beautiful inside and out.
I will put in a word here about my wonderful Uncles too.  Uncle Roger gave me a signed copy of his book and a beautiful poem, one of many, that he has written. Uncle Richard shared some of his knowledge and expertise in landscaping with me.  His yard is always beautiful!  Love these two too!
This was a quick trip, but it was a blast.  I hope my wonderful Washington aunts and uncles stick around for a long time to come!  I hope my mom and sisters do too.  😉
